Expression Levels of Interleukin-1 Beta (IL-1β), Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase (iNOS), and Tumor Necrosis Factor-Alpha (TNF-α) in Patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome at Baghdad Hospital, Iraq

The etiology of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is unknown. However, it has been suggested that immune activation and low-grade mucosal inflammation may be involved in the pathogenesis of IBS. This study was undertaken to estimate the blood levels of interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-a) in Iraqi IBS patients and healthy controls.
Blood samples were drawn from 20 IBS patients and 20 healthy volunteers and were studied using the real-time PCR technique in the present study. Results of the analyzed data showed a significant increase in TNF-a levels (p < 0.05) between IBS patients and controls (p > 0.05). However, there was no significant difference in the mRNA levels of iNOS and IL-1β between groups.
This study suggests that patients with IBS show altered mRNA levels of TNF-a. However, further studies are required to clarify the roles of this cytokine in the pathogenesis of IBS.
